IT TAKES MORE THAN A MAJOR

In today's changing economy, you need more than just a resume workshop to prepare for life after graduation. Wesleyan College's commitment to career preparation is demonstrated through our signature and unique Here to Career Initiative. Here to Career is a 4-year career development plan, combining curricular and co-curricular requirements with checkpoints along the way to help you prepare for when you leave Wesleyan.

At Wesleyan, You Gain Professional Tools to Use for the Rest of Your Life.

Throughout Your Four Years You Will...

EXPLORE

Explore career resources and opportunities during sessions incorporated into your first-year seminar, have access to personalized career coaching, enroll in an optional Career & Major Exploration class, access internship/job fairs, and have access to many informative workshops.

96% of the class of 2020 survey respondents agreed that they are knowledgeable about their career options!

ENGAGE

Engage with career development topics in your Junior year through a required Professional Development course. You will learn how to articulate your unique skills; share your career story in ways that resonate with employers and graduate schools; learn how to navigate the job market and graduate school applications; build your financial literacy; and develop tools for lifelong career development. When alumnae and employers hear about this class, they say “Wow, I wish I’d had this class in college!

What students are saying about the Professional Development course:

“I love how the class gives a structure of preparing for post graduation. I have a clear picture of what I should do, where I can get resources from, how I can find my interests and strengths. All the assignments motivate me to take action in thinking about my career and future plan. It’s definitely one of the best classes I’ve taken at Wesleyan.” -Yongxian Lun '21

“This class showed me that I am prepared - that I have the ability to do well and succeed after Wesleyan! I was very nervous and purposely avoiding thinking about my future because I was scared, but this class made me feel prepared and that I am enough!” - Ty Battle '20

“It is okay to be unsure at first, because you will find your way through this class. It helped me decide on what I want to do in life, because I had no idea initially.” - Andrea Morgan '22

EXPERIENCE

Experience skill growth and clarity on professional goals through a Professional Development Experience (PDE) that relates to your future career path. This is not your average internship!

Instead, all Wesleyan students complete an experiential learning opportunity, in which they gain relevant experience and build professional skills. You will pursue an experience that best fits your career goals, such as independent research projects, professor-led research, performance projects, or leadership projects. Of course, many of our students opt for an internship with an employer.

100% of the class of 2020 survey respondents agreed that their Professional Development Experience was beneficial to their professional and personal growth!

What students are saying about their Professional Development Experiences:

“This experience is giving me many opportunities in terms of what I will be doing in my career. I am also learning ways to communicate with others and work together. I think that this experience is also helping me gain connections.” -Sarah BoutwelL '21

“[My Professional Development Experience] is helping me develop my personal communication, in addition to giving me hands on experience with planning and executing a larger project.” -Nora Staurheim '22

We are serious in our commitment to helping you get from Here to Career. Our dedicated Center for Career Development works in partnership with Wesleyan faculty to ensure that every student is ready for the next step after graduation.
